Donor Eligibility Rules
Eligibility rules have changed
Cascade Regional Blood Services has made some changes to donor eligibility based on new FDA guidance. The FDA revised several policies based on completed studies and epidemiological data.
In summary, the following changes have been implemented:
- Deferrals for certain HIV risks factors have been reduced from a 12 month deferral to a 3 month deferral
- Certain malaria risk factors have also been reduced from a 12 month deferral to a 3 month deferral
- The deferral requirement for donors who have spent time at military bases in Europe due to potential risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob, or Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob, has been lifted for some areas. Please inquire to learn if you are now eligible.

Cascade Regional Blood Services is excited to share that the FDA recently finalized recommendations to update blood donor eligibility for blood centers across the U.S. We are committed to changing with the new FDA guidance which supports a donor community that reflects the vibrant and diverse community we serve. “How do I get this awesome tote”, you may be asking yourself.
It’s simple.
If you’re a WHOLE BLOOD DONOR, simply schedule your next appointment before leaving the donation center, show up and donate at the agreed upon time and receive your new CRBS tote bag!
If you’re an AUTOMATED DONOR, and have already scheduled your next appointment with your Automated Donations Scheduler during your reminder call, you will receive your tote when you come in for that appointment. If you don’t have another appointment scheduled, please stop by the front desk on your way out and ask to set up your next donation before you leave. Our front desk staff will be glad to connect you with your Scheduler to make your next appointment.*

During automated donation, donors can give a specific component in greater quantities than can be collected in a whole blood donation. Blood is processed in a cell separator machine, the needed products are collected, and the remaining blood is returned to the donor. The automated collection system takes combinations of platelets, plasma, and red blood cells depending on your blood type. Automated donation allows CRBS to efficiently manage the blood supply by collecting the optimal products needed by our community hospitals – helping cancer, trauma, and transplant patients.
There are additional requirements for female donors. Please call 1-877-24-BLOOD to speak with a staff member. *CRBS allows donors to participate in one contest per season (for this season iDonate and Summer Challenge are separate contests).
