Recognition: School Drive Partners

Tacoma School of the Arts-March 5, 2010

On Friday, March 5, Tacoma School of the Arts High School held their largest blood drive ever, registering 145 donors! SOTA has a total enrollment of just under 500 students. With hard work and dedication, the students were able to recruit one third of their student body to donate blood!

Humanities instructor, Debbie Shapiro, coordinates a blood drive every year in conjunction with four different health classes.  All four classes come to the Tacoma Donor Center for a field trip. They learn about the donation process and how Cascade Regional Blood Services processes the blood after it is donated. After the tour, the classes go to work on creating different committees to make the blood drive successful.

The classes put a huge amount of effort into planning, recruiting and making sure every donor was thanked for their life saving gift.  The students had an entire room, the Bat Cave, filled with donated goodies, including food and handmade gifts for everyone!

Cascade Regional Blood Services is very thankful of the effort SOTA put toward their drive.

Tacoma School of the Arts-March 20, 2009

On Friday, March 20, the Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) had an extremely successful blood drive. With a goal of 75 donors, 88 people were registered, and 69 were first-time blood donors. This is truly a great accomplishment.

Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to thank Debbie Shapiro, who again this year helped organize and coordinate the drive. She does a tremendous job of preparing the students for the event. A month before the drive, Debbie brought some of her students to tour the facilities of CRBS. On the day of the drive, the team assisted in the canteen, and helped sign students in and out of class. Their preparation was a key to making this drive a great success.

SOTA has been very active in the local community. In addition to hosting a community blood drive, SOTA Partners hosted an auction for art education and change on April 18 at the Sharon McGavick Conference Center in Lakewood.

Cascade Regional Blood Services would like to thank the students and the staff of SOTA. Their support helps CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. St. Joseph Medical Center and the rest of our community hospitals. We are very much looking forward to continuing our blood drive partnership with The Tacoma School of the Arts.

Tacoma School of the Arts - March 14, 2008

The teachers and students at TSOTA recently held their first ever blood drive, which provided much needed support for Cascade Regional Blood Services and our community’s blood supply. The drive was such a great success that it was featured in the March 21 edition of the Tacoma Public Schools WEBUCATOR newsletter. Some of the pictures are shown below.

Tacoma School of the Arts (TSOTA) junior Angela Hardy rests while her blood is being drawn during TSOTA's very successful blood drive, while a group of her fellow students pose for a picture in front of the Cascade Regional Blood Services’ blood mobile used during the drive.

Debbie Shapiro, Health Facilitator/Community Service Coordinator and Humanities Instructor at the school took on the role as drive coordinator and had great expectations from the beginning. Because of a relatively small enrollment, the drive goal was set at 30, which Debbie assured us was far too low; she was right. The sign-ups grew so quickly that a blood mobile was needed in addition to the room already set up for the drive, and the goal was raised to 70. The students exceeded even that by registering 80 donors on the day of the drive, many times the number a school their size would expect to participate.

The TSOTA students weren’t the only ones to donate during the blood drive.

“Neighboring businesses provided snacks for people who gave blood,” said Shapiro. “Many thanks to Tosca Caffe, Cutter's Point, Abella's Pizza and Indochine. The day was a lot of fun for everyone and extremely successful. The units collected at this drive will help save the lives of many patients in our area hospitals. Community service is certainly alive and well at TSOTA.

A huge thank you to Debbie, the staff and students at TSOTA for a phenomenal and fun event.
