Recognition: School Drive Partners

Sumner High School – October 29, 2009

On Thursday, October 29, Sumner High School (SHS) held their first blood drive of the year. The drive was a success, 80 donors were registered and 56 were first time donors. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like thank Julie McKenzie, FCCLA Advisor and teacher at Sumner High School. She did a great job of organizing the students of FCCLA, who sponsored the blood drive. The FCCLA students that conducted blood drives at SHS for the past three years have graduated, and it was an entirely new group of students this year. Despite being new to the blood drive process, they exceeded their goal of 75 donors. Great job!

CRBS would like to thank all of the students and staff at Sumner High School. Their continued support helps CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to St. Anthony Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and the rest of our community hospitals. We are very much looking forward to our next blood drive at SHS, home of the Spartans.

Sumner High School-February 12, 2009

On Thursday, February 12, Sumner High School (SHS) held their second blood drive of the school year. At this drive, 76 students were registered and 42 of them were first-time donors! Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to thank Julie McKenzie and Janine Sather, co-coordinators of the blood drive. They did a fantastic job managing and guiding the sponsor group, the FCCLA.

The FCCLA did a great job of organizing the event; they conducted sign-ups for three weeks prior to the blood drive. On the day of the drive, the FCCLA kept the students moving smoothly through the check-in/registration process. Current FCCLA President, Whitney Raffle, and fellow member Jodi Pettit did a great job running the sign-in table. The group required all students under 18 to turn in minor permission slips prior to the day of the drive. They then directed the students to the blood mobiles where the registration and donation process was completed. After students finished donating, an FCCLA member escorted them back to class.

CRBS congratulates the Girl’s Soccer team, the Volleyball team, and the Boy’s Tennis team for winning their league titles and participating in post-season play. The Spartan Volleyball team went on to the state tournament and brought home the 5th place trophy. Congratulations!

Sumner High School helps CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to Good Samaritan Hospital and the rest of our community hospitals. We are very much looking forward our next blood drive at Sumner, currently scheduled for May 7.

Sumner High School-October 28, 2008

Sumner High School held their first blood drive of the new school year on October 28. The drive went very well with 57 donors registered, and 45 of them donating for the first time with CRBS! That is a great school accomplishment. Sponsoring the drive was the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) group. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to thank the FCCLA for their hard work and determination. Their leadership was crucial in making this drive a success.

The FCCLA conducted sign-ups for three weeks prior to the blood drive. They also escorted donors from class to the bloodmobile, and then back to class again. This helped keep the drive extremely efficient. CRBS would also like to thank the President of FCCLA, Whitney Raffle, and Jodi Pettit for their organization and leadership. The coordinators for this drive were Julie McKenzie and Janine Sather. Their guidance was key in helping to make this drive a great success.

SHS blood drives help us maintain an adequate blood supply for patients undergoing transfusions at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and at our other community hospitals. Their partnership is important to CRBS and everyone in our community. We are looking forward to our next drive there and the opportunity to work with the great students and staff at Sumner High School, home of the Spartans.

Sumner High School-May 23, 2008

Sumner High School held a great blood drive on May 23. At this drive, 65 donors were registered, a great accomplishment under some very difficult circumstances. The students of FCCLA faced many challenges on the day of the drive, including senior skip day, a soccer tournament, and last minute parking changes. However, the students persevered and held a great blood drive.

Cascade Regional Blood Services would like to thank Julie McKenzie, teacher and FCCLA advisor, and the students of FCCLA for putting together a great drive. Furthermore, Whitney Raffle deserves recognition for her enthusiasm and support of the program.

The blood drives at Sumner High School are a tremendous help to our community hospitals. Cascade Regional Blood Services is looking forward their next blood drive!

Sumner High School-October 10, 2007

The recent drive at Sumner High School was again coordinated by the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The CRBS Drive Consultant, Megan Johnson, reported that the group was extremely well organized under their president, Whitney Raffle and their staff advisor, Julie McKenzie. FCCLA members have runners get donors from class and also escort students to the bus. Walkie-Talkies are used to communicate with the CRBS staff on the blood mobiles.

Sumner High School provides exceptional support for CRBS, Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and other area hospitals by sponsoring three blood drives each year.

Principal Gill Gaines and school nurse Robyn Lawrence were also very supportive as 73 donors registered to donate blood for this drive. This is the largest fall drive SHS has had in several years.

Last year 2 groups from FCCLA competed at state level and earned gold medals. One group qualified and went on to nationals where they were a runner up.

This year the school is offering the IB program (International Baccalaureate). Schools offering the IB diploma program must undergo a rigorous authorization process, culminating in a site visit by a delegation from International Baccalaureate Organization.

Congratulations the great accomplishments.
