On September 30, Orting High School held their annual September blood drive with Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS). The blood drive was sponsored by the Stop Auto Fatalities through Youth Efforts (SAFTYE) group. Coordinating the group was Becky Gundstrom, a career counselor at Orting High School. Becky and her students did a phenomenal job of coordinating this blood drive. The drive registered 67 donors, and 43 were first-time donors.
The students of SAFTYE did an excellent job of recruiting donors prior to the blood drive. They were also a big help in the refreshment center on the day of the drive. CRBS would like to thank all of the students and staff of Orting High School. Their commitment to the blood drive program helps CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center and the rest of our community hospitals.
The next blood drive at Orting High School, home of the Cardinals, is scheduled for Thursday, January 14.
On Wednesday, April 8, Orting High School (OHS) held its second blood drive of the school year. This blood drive registered 53 donors and 34 of them were first-time blood donors, helping make this another great success. Cascade Regional Blood Services would like to give a special “thank you” to our blood drive coordinator, Becky Gundstrom, a career counselor at Orting High School. We would also like to thank the sponsor group, Saftye (Stop Auto Fatalities through Youth Efforts).
This blood drive was originally scheduled in January; however, it was cancelled due to inclement weather. Then it was rescheduled for the week after Spring Break in April. The sign-up sheet was retained and individual reminders and permission slips went out to all students who signed up for the previous blood drive. The students of Saftye did a great job of coordinating and promoting this effort. Their hard work helped make this drive a success!
Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to congratulate the Wrestling Team at Orting High School for their very successful year. They are 2009 State Champions! We would also like to thank all the students, staff and parents of OHS for their support. OHS helps CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply for patients who receive treatment at Good Samaritan and our other community hospitals.
On September 25, Orting High School (OHS) held their first blood drive of the new school year and it was again very successful. With a goal of 65, there were 71 students who registered to donate blood! This is a testament to the hard work of the blood drive sponsor group, The Saftye (Stop auto fatalities through youth efforts). Furthermore, the coordinator, Becky Gundstrom, was again very instrumental in the success of this blood drive.
The drive was held in the school library with full support from the entire staff. The Cascade Regional Blood Services’ consultant conducted sign-ups in the school lunchroom for two weeks prior to the drive. The staff at OHS was very supportive of the drive and several participated. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to thank them for that support, as we realize there are many other activities that also take their time and effort.
OHS, home of the Cardinals, conducts two blood drives per year. The first drive is in September, and the other in January. Students are able to earn additional community services hours by volunteering at the Safeway blood drive across the street, which is held regularly in the community.
The support of Orting High School helps Cascade Regional Blood Services maintain an adequate blood supply to Good Samaritan Hospital and our other community hospitals. We are very much looking forward to our next blood drive at Orting High School and the support of a fantastic organization.
Orting High School held a very successful blood drive on January 31. The blood drive coordinator was Becky Gundstrom, a career counselor at the school. The sponsor group was Safety/Stop Auto Fatalities through Youth Efforts. Cascade Regional Blood Services would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication. Their efforts resulted in 60 donors!
The blood drive was held in the library and a sign-up table was placed in the school lunch room for two weeks prior to the blood drive. The principal of the school, Dorris Bolender, is also a blood donor and a big supporter of our cause. The students and staff of Orting High School have always done a great job of helping CRBS in our efforts to maintain an adequate blood supply for Good Samaritan and our other area hospitals.
Student volunteers were available throughout the blood drive to serve cookies and juice to fellow students. OHS conducts two blood drives a year, one in September and the other in January. Not only do students help put together successful blood drives at Orting High School, but they also have the opportunity to volunteer at monthly community blood drives across the street at Safeway.

There are many people to thank for helping to make this recent drive at Orting High School such a pleasant, fun and successful experience. First, thank you to Becky Gundstrom who has been working with CRBS as drive coordinator for several years. Her efforts and the donations from drives at Orting HS have provided hundreds of units of blood to patients in area hospitals.
This year, there was full support from the Safety Club, Principal Doris Bolender, Assistant Principal Jon Bell, and the entire staff at Orting High School. There were 50 donors who registered for this drive and 26 donors who donated for the first time.
The Safety Club not only sponsors the blood drives, which provide much needed support for CRBS and the community. They also are involved in food drives, Toys for Tots, as well as “Anti-Drug” and “Suicide Prevention” activities. In addition, they organize an annual pickle ball tournament at the school. We were told this is a very special event and that everyone looks forward to the competition, the prizes and the fun each year.
It’s good to see the support provided for our community by this group of students. They provide a great example for others. Thanks again to our “HEROES” at Orting High School. We are looking forward to the next drive with Becky and her group on January 31.
