 On Friday, April 10, Gig Harbor High School put together a fantastic blood drive. At this drive, 95 students were registered and 58 were first-time donors; this is a great accomplishment! We would like to thank Jim Greetham, an American Studies teacher at Gig Harbor High School (GHHS), and Stefanie Johnson, coordinator of Reach Ministries. They were instrumental in making this drive a huge success.
Prior to the drive, the students of GHHS, under the direction of Jim and Stefanie, worked very hard during their lunch periods to gather sign-ups. On the day of the drive, they served as runners to bring students to and from the bloodmobiles and helped keep the drive running smoothly.
Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would also like to thank all the students and staff of GHHS for their support. Their commitment and dedication is the reason blood drives at GHHS are so successful. CRBS needs their help to meet the increasing needs of our hospitals, and they are always there putting out maximum effort to help us in our mission to provide an adequate blood supply for the communities we serve.
Blood drives at GHHS help CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to St. Anthony Hospital, Tacoma General Hospital and the rest of our community hospitals. We are very much looking forward to the blood drives at GHHS next school year.
The first drive of the 2007-08 school year went extremely well, as always. Reach Ministries, under the direction of Abby Isaacson, helped to organize the drive from the initial planning through the activities on the day of the drive. This drive was also the senior project for Julia Bachmeier, who was the lead for the school. Julia has also helped coordinate drives at Gig Harbor High School for the past two years.
Due to the great efforts by Julia, Abby, and the entire committee, the response on the day of the drive was overwhelming. The drive was conducted on two blood mobiles and the results far exceeded their goal of 80, with a total of 93 donors participating in the drive. This is one the larger drives at GHHS in the last few years.
Another person who has been instrumental over the years and deserves a big thank you is Jim Greetham. Jim is a dedicated teacher and has also assisted students in community service projects including the CRBS blood drives at the school. His support is crucial in making the drives successful.
Gig Harbor High School and the entire community have been great supporters of CRBS. We are relying on their continued support as we look forward to the increased need with the upcoming opening of St. Anthony Hospital.

Gig Harbor High School blood donors had a special visitor Tuesday, Nov. 14. Meredith Nutt (mom) and her son Ben visited all three blood mobiles that day to thank each donor, personally. Ben, a nine year, has ALL Leukemia, and “wanted to see the people who save my life, not just the numbers on the bags of blood.” He was in good spirits and happy to see all the donors.
Ben is currently a patient at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, and is being transfused to aid in his recovery. While visiting each mobile, one donor stood up and said (for all to hear), “And that’s why I donate blood.” Ben also visited the student coordinators at the registration table inside the high school and was warmly welcomed by all.
Gig Harbor High School registered 81 donors on their November 14th blood drive.
