Decatur High School (DHS) really knows how to give back to their community. Their Key Club and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) groups alternate sponsoring blood drives throughout the year. Both groups organized two drives under the guidance of their advisors, Heather White with FCCLA, and Robin Chapman and Suzanne Endroedy for Key Club. In September 2009, DHS registered 80 donors, in November 2009, they registered 77 donors, and their February 2010 drive registered 83. Their last blood drive of this school year was held on April 29, 2010, and the total for the 2009-10 school year has exceeded last year’s total by over 10 percent.
When Jann Millspaugh, Office Manager at DHS, was asked how she felt about the blood drives, she stated, “The blood drives give the students an opportunity to become aware and contribute to the community.” Sue Inglis, DHS nurse, added; “Because teenagers are more prone to having adverse reactions, we have worked closely with Cascade Regional Blood Services to ensure the well being of our students. Together we have put plans in place to reduce adverse reactions, therefore allowing our students the opportunity to have a better overall experience while contributing to our community.” Sue is referring to the program CRBS developed after meeting with school nurses in local school districts to identify ways to reduce reactions. Students are encouraged to be prepared to donate prior to their drive, which helps enhance the donor experience.
CRBS gives a great big thank you to the entire staff and the students of Decatur High School, especially Key Club and FCCLA. Decatur is one of a few schools to support four drives each year. Their ongoing support enables us to help save lives at St. Francis Hospital and other hospitals and clinics in our region.
On Tuesday, September 22, Decatur High School sponsored their first blood drive of this new school year. At this drive, 85 students were registered to donate and 42 were first-time donors. The Key Club sponsored the blood drive and again did a fantastic job. Their members assisted staff and students the entire day. They passed out t-shirts, helped in the refreshment area, and signed students in and out of class. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Chapman, the advisor to the Key Club students. We would also like to thank Harry Choi, the student group leader of Key Club.
CRBS thanks all the students and staff of Decatur High School. Their tremendous support helps us maintain an adequate blood supply to St. Francis, Tacoma General, Mary Bridge, and the rest of the community hospitals served by CRBS and supported by donors like those at Decatur. We look forward to another great year with the Gators. Their next blood drive at Decatur is scheduled for November 17.
On Tuesday, May 26, Decatur High School had a very productive blood drive. At this event, 68 students were registered and 31 were first-time donors. This particular drive was sponsored by the students of FCCLA. The FCCLA students did a great job of promoting the drive in the weeks prior to the blood drive date. They also did a fantastic job during the drive, assisting in the refreshment center. The hard work put in by these students made this drive a resounding success.
Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to congratulate the graduating class of Decatur High School. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. CRBS would also like to thank all of the students and staff of Decatur High School for their continued support to our mission. Their efforts and support during the entire school year are second to none and greatly appreciated.
The blood collected by CRBS during the drives at Decatur directly supports St. Francis Hospital and our other community hospitals. We look forward to continuing our great partnership with Decatur High School this next year.

On Tuesday, February 10, Decatur High School (DHS) sponsored their third blood drive of the year. During this drive, 66 students registered to donate and 26 of them donated for the first time. This particular blood drive was sponsored by the Key Club, under the guidance of Suzanne Endroedy and Robin Chapman. The students of Key Club did a great job of organizing this drive. They helped sign-up students prior to the blood drive, helped in the refreshment area and passed out t-shirts and bananas on the day of the drive. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) would like to thank the students of Key Club, as well as Susan and Robin for all of their hard work, their commitment to their blood drive program, and the support they help to provide for CRBS, St. Francis and other area hospitals.
DHS leads all schools in the area by sponsoring four blood drives annually. Two of the blood drives are sponsored by the Key Club, the other two by the FCCLA. The students and staff at DHS have been extremely dedicated over the years, and it is always a great experience when we hold a drive there. We are looking forward to our next blood drive at DHS, home of the Gators. That drive is currently scheduled for May 26.
On Wednesday, November 19, Decatur High School held a very successful blood drive. A total of 93 donors were registered, a great accomplishment by FCCLA who were the sponsor group for this drive. The FCCLA members recruited donors prior to the blood drive, assisted in the canteen, and passed out t-shirts to the donors. Cascade Regional Blood Services (CRBS) gives a special thanks to Heather White, who provided wonderful leadership to the FCCLA group.
The FCCLA group is also making a difference in the lives of many less fortunate in the Federal Way community. The group put on a food drive for the ECEAP preschool over the recent holiday period. Food donations were for students and their families. CRBS would also like to congratulate the boy’s varsity basketball team, who were SPSL North Champions, with a 22-8 record!
Cascade Regional Blood Services is grateful to the students and staff of Decatur High School for their support. Their blood drives help CRBS maintain an adequate blood supply to St. Francis Hospital, as well as our other community hospitals. Our next blood drive is scheduled for February 10 and will be hosted by the Key Club. Decatur High School sponsors four blood drives a year, two drives by FCCLA and two by the Key Club.
The Decatur High School Key Club stepped up again this year and sponsored the first high school drive of the new school year. Not only did they recruit and sign up donors prior to the drive, they also worked hard to reschedule them once the hours of the drive changed unexpectedly. The blood drive was truly a team effort, with the leadership of the Key Club members and Sue Inglis, the school nurse. The team was able to register 58 donors in three and a half hours! A special thanks to the new Key Club advisor, Robin Chapman.
Our community relies heavily on the contributions of schools to help provide an adequate supply throughout the year for St. Francis and our other area hospitals serviced by Cascade Regional Blood Services. The summer months are challenging for that reason, and we know we can always count on DHS to get us going the first part of the each new school year.
The blood drives at Decatur High School are a huge help to the communities of South King and Pierce Counties. With their help, we are able to maintain an adequate blood supply to our community hospitals. We very much look forward to our next blood drive at Decatur High School, scheduled for November 19.

As usual, Decatur High School stepped up and was the first public high school blood drive of the new school year. Last year, Decatur was also our first drive and did a fantastic job throughout the year. Decatur High School is a long time supporter of CRBS, St. Francis and our other area hospitals. The work their advisors and student groups do is a great example of service to others and our community.
During this drive, Suzanne Endroedy and the Key Club did another fantastic job by registering 80 donors. This early in the year, it’s hard to get everyone organized and interested in a special activity. However, they were extremely successful with a 40% increase over the results of a year ago. It’s great to have Decatur and all our schools back after the summer. We are looking forward to our next drive at DHS on November 20. This is another critical time right before a long Thanksgiving holiday weekend when their support is extremely valuable and appreciated.
