Joel Stumph – Whole Blood Donor of the Year

Joel is our single largest whole blood donor and is truly a legend here at CRBS - he has donated over 41 gallons, which is 328 donations! To give you some idea of what this represents, if someone donated six times a year, which is the maximum number allowed, it would take almost 55 years donating every 56 days to reach this level.

Thank you Joel, for all you have done for CRBS and our community for so many years.

Bob Annon – Apheresis Donor of the Year

Bob, a legendary donor at CRBS, has made 585 donations which equates to over 73 gallons!  His first whole blood donation was in August 1954.  He switched to platelet donations on November 12, 1982, when CRBS first began collecting platelets on automated equipment.

Shortly after Bob’s first platelet donation in 1982, he received a call on the day he was scheduled to donate to ensure he was going to make it in. There was an immediate need for platelets to help support a baby who was having an emergency surgery that same day. Once the donation process had started, a call was placed to the hospital so they could begin preparing the baby for surgery. The incident really touched Bob, and he still gets choked up a bit when he talks about it, knowing how much of an impact he makes on others’ lives by being a donor.

Bob, it is an honor for CRBS to have you as a donor and friend. Thanks and congratulations.

Richard Noe – ECMO 'Baby Blood' Donor of the Year

ECMO or Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation is a special part of our Baby Blood program that requires us to have several special units of O negative blood available at all times. ECMO equipment circulates and oxygenates the blood for a child whose cardiovascular system is not able to do that on its own. This is truly a life-saving measure that most often is unplanned, and we rely on our donors to provide the link that makes this all possible.

Richard Noe began donating around 1955 when his mother was undergoing treatments for cancer and receiving transfusions. At that time, he was in the military and stationed in North Carolina, where he recruited his fellow servicemen to donate in honor of his mom.  Richard began donating blood because he was needed and has continued donating ever since.  Richard was one of our first ECMO donors back in 2005, and has donated 34 times for the program since.  Thank you Richard and congratulations on being our Baby Blood Donor of the Year!

Mt. Tahoma High School (Key Club 2009) - High School Blood Drive of the Year

Mt. Tahoma High School is located in the heart of Tacoma and in the heart of our CRBS community. Teacher Coordinator, Ronnie Gordon and MTHS’s Key Club has long sponsored successful blood drives on their campus. In fact, Mr. Gordon is an alumnus of Mt. Tahoma High School and received his teaching credentials at Pacific Lutheran University.

Today, Mr. Gordon leads the Key Club students through three drives each school year. Key-clubbers do an excellent job of signing up donors, helping with blood drive preparations, organizing the blood drive room and working with the school nurse and administration on the day of the blood drive. During the 2009-10 school year, Mt. Tahoma High School registered 359 donors! Mt. Tahoma blood drives have consistently achieved great results and we value their partnership.  Congratulations and thank you to Mt. Tahoma High School as our 2010 School Blood Drive of the Year!

Phil & Angela Aponte – Community Inspiration Award
Phil is a science teacher at Clover Park High School in Lakewood.  He began donating at PLU in 1985; he has donated 51 times (over six gallons).  In 2002 he became the blood drive coordinator for Clover Park and has continued to volunteer in that capacity.  Over the past 9 years, Phil has coordinated 24 drives at Clover Park, registering nearly 2,000 donors for CRBS and our community hospitals.  Phil sees each blood drive as an opportunity to encourage his students to participate in giving back to the community.  Phil is a firm believer that students who become involved in their community early will likely be involved as adults, and blood drives offer that opportunity for a large number of students.

Angela has donated 43 times (over five gallons) and has donated regularly for the ECMO program, 28 times since the program started in 2005. Angela, also a science teacher, has been teaching for 25 years and teaches K thru grade 5 at Midland Elementary School.
Thank you, Phil and Angela,  for the positive way in which you are contributing to our community, as dedicated teachers, dedicated blood donors and advocates; you truly are an inspiration to us all. Congratulations!

St. Joseph Medical Center – Community Blood Drive of the Year

Cascade Regional Blood Services works closely with Franciscan Health System and St. Joseph Hospital.  In addition to our transfusion services partnership, St. Joseph Medical Center also sponsors regular CRBS blood drives.  While St. Joseph's has sponsored blood drives for decades, only during the past few years has the drive success increased tremendously.

When Sherri Bebbington took over the blood drive program in 2008, the blood drives grew steadily. After fine-tuning the drive program and mastering an effective communication plan, the blood drive has nearly tripled in size.  In 2010, St. Joseph Medical Center sponsored six blood drives, registering 193 blood donors and making this one of our largest community-sponsored blood drives!  Thank you Sherri for all your hard work and dedication to blood donation!

Real Life Family Center – Church Blood Drive of the Year

Next to our schools, churches provide the second largest number of units to our community’s blood supply. Real Life Family Center in Tacoma is our 2010 Church Blood Drive of the Year recipient.  Real Life Family Center held two blood drives in 2010, registering a total of 148 blood donors. This was the largest number of registered blood donors from any church blood drive.  Thank you Real Life Family Center, 2010 Church Blood Drive of the Year!
