On October 23, Mt. Tahoma High School held a fantastic blood drive. At this drive, 119 students registered to donate blood! Sponsoring this drive was the Key Club. The Key Club works extremely hard to put together successful blood drives, and this drive was no exception. They conducted sign-ups and promoted the drive for two weeks prior to the blood drive date. They also inspired 70 new donors to register, a truly fantastic accomplishment.
The Key Club at Mt. Tahoma High School is extremely involved in the community. Members of the club frequently volunteer at St. Leo’s Food Connection, as well as the Festival of Trees. They also hold numerous fundraisers for the school and local community. The mission of caring and service is embodied in each member as they advocate volunteering in their school, neighborhood and community.
Cascade Regional Blood Services would like to thank the Key Club, the student body, and the faculty of Mt. Tahoma High School. Their commitment to blood drives helps save countless lives in South King and Pierce Counties. We are looking forward to our next blood drive at Mt. Tahoma High School.

During their recent drive, Mt. Tahoma came through with the largest number of donors they have had in recent history. Ronnie Gordon, Key Club Advisor, and Thu-Ha Truong, Club President, played a major role in organizing this drive. Meredith McCann-Leo was also in charge of sign ups. She was assisted by Jahara Lewis and Sharleen McDaniel who both work at CRBS as donor schedulers.
There were a whopping 128 students and staff who showed up to donate. Their previous high was 113 donors. The turnout far exceeded our expectations and provided much needed units of blood to our community for use in area hospitals.
We hope this is a great year for Mt. Tahoma and are looking forward to our upcoming drives during the remainder of the year. Our next drive is scheduled for January 24. We will be anticipating and ready for another record turnout.
We also spoke with Jordon Keller before he donated blood. He is like many of the students who participate in blood drives and offer support in many ways. Jordan is planning on attending Whitworth College and had just returned from faxing his application and essays for an ACT 6 scholarship. We don’t know much about the ACT Scholarships, but after reading Jordon’s very well written material we think he has an excellent chance of attaining his goal. A friend of his chimed in that his essays “hit you right in the pumper (heart),” and we couldn’t agree more.
One of the organizers of this blood drive was Jahara Lewis. Jahara has close ties to Cascade Regional Blood Services. She has coordinated previous blood drives at Mt. Tahoma and also worked as a donor scheduler for CRBS this past summer. Jahara excelled at her job to say the least. She showed amazing ability and commitment while calling other high school students to encourage them to participate in our summer iPod promotion. Now that school is back in session, the Mount Tahoma Key Club and ASB are the beneficiaries of her hard work and dedication.
We’d like to take this opportunity to again thank Jahara and all the other volunteers as well, for all their hard work to help ensure that our community has a sufficient blood supply!
