Twelve-year-old Greg Hachey is currently fighting for his life. Greg was diagnosed in May, 2000 with Relapse Acute pre-B cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The only known cure is a peripheral stem-cell donation or a bone marrow transplant from a suitable donor. So far, no suitable match has been made.
Greg is the son of a Caucasian father and a Filipino mother. His search for a match has been complicated due to the nature of his bone marrow tissue type matching. The complication stems from the lack of Asians (particularly Filipinos) that are not registered as bone marrow donors. The Puyallup family is encouraging family members and friends to donate bone marrow and blood throughout the week (June 13 – 17) during regular business hours at Cascade Regional Blood Services. Bone marrow testing will take place during regular draw days (Monday and Tuesday) and whole blood donation will be accepted all week long.
Greg’s parents stated: “Because of the time delay involved in testing and entering new donors in the national registry, it is important to act now, if we’re going to save Greg’s life.” “It only takes one person and that person is out there somewhere.”
Cascade Regional Blood Services encourages any supporters to donate or join the National Marrow Donor Registry by coming to the Puyallup office during regular business hours. Your donation saves lives.
