HOW IT BEGAN
Summer months pose a difficult challenge for blood center collections across the country. CRBS is no exception. About 20 percent of our community’s blood supply is derived from schools, and it is challenging to replace that loss from June to August every year.
In June 2006, we started a program designed to encourage more donors to come to our Donor Centers during the summer, especially those school-age donors who typically only donate at their school drives. We chose a program we named iDonate, which centered on weekly drawings for an Apple iPod. All donors who registered to donate at our Donor Centers on Mondays and Tuesdays were automatically entered in the drawing. We chose those days because historically, they have been lower-volume days where we needed to attract additional donors. We’ve changed the logo each year as the iPod product has also changed. The inaugural year was a huge success, and each successive year, the program has been a sensation.
Individuals and members of our community have generously supported this program by donating money to purchase the prizes. We hire part-time summer donor schedulers who focus on calling previous school donors and sharing the promotion with them. We also spread the word in other ways leading up to the promotion; including using an iDonate t-shirt for our last school drives of the year.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT: You may make an appointment by calling 1-877-24-BLOOD. Walk-ins are always welcome.

PREPARE: Before donating blood, be sure to eat well and drink plenty of non-caffeinated beverages.

LIMITATIONS: The iDonate promotion is not applicable to mobile drives. One giveaway per week (during promotional dates). No purchase necessary.
