Immediate Need for Local Blood Donations Grows as Puerto Rico Starts Receiving Emergency Shipments
Tacoma, WA – Cascade Regional Blood Services is diligently working to meet the demand for blood locally and throughout the United States. There has been an increased need due to the fact that Puerto Rico recently requested ongoing assistance with blood products because of the Zika Virus.
The Zika Virus is currently putting substantial pressure on our local blood supply. With new guidelines recently released by the FDA, there has been a drop in local, eligible donors. Donors who have traveled to Mexico, the Caribbean and/or Central or South America are now deferred from donating for 30 days, which has affected our blood supply.
CRBS is partnered with Blood Centers of America (BCA), an organization that responds nationally and globally to any emergent blood product needs. The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico’s blood supply has been drastically affected by the Zika Virus and CRBS is offering its assistance to help this affected region, once we have supplied blood products to fulfill our own area hospitals.
“There is an urgent need to boost our blood supply at this current time. We just never know when a local or national emergency, like the Zika Virus, might occur. CRBS has been able to immediately respond to all emergencies in the past and will continue in the future with the help of our dedicated donors and the strong support of the community,” said Dan Schmitt, CRBS Director of Donor Resources.
In order to keep up with this urgent need for blood locally and nationally, CRBS is encouraging anyone that has not donated blood in the last 56 days and any new donors to please stop by one of our donor centers in Tacoma, Puyallup, or Federal Way to donate. If you have been waiting to donate, this is the perfect time.
Information about donation locations and times can be found on our website at www.crbs.net. Appointments can be made by calling 1-877-24-BLOOD.
Cascade Regional Blood Services is a nonprofit community resource that has provided blood to South King and Pierce County hospitals and clinics for the last 70 years.
